Two rolls of paper can carry the identical basis weight or GSM and still feel — and measure — noticeably different in thickness. That difference is caliper — paper’s physical thickness, measured directly rather than inferred from its weight. This guide explains what caliper is, how it is expressed, how it relates to basis weight and GSM, and why it matters when specifying a paper roll.

What Is Paper Caliper?

Caliper is the physical thickness of a sheet of paper or paperboard, measured directly rather than calculated from any other property. In North America, the standard test method is TAPPI/ANSI T 411, which defines caliper as the perpendicular distance between a sheet’s two principal surfaces, measured with a micrometer under a specified applied pressure held for a specified time. ISO 534 is an international standard that specifies methods for single-sheet thickness of paper and board and bulking thickness of paper.

Because the applied pressure and dwell time are specified by the test method, caliper readings are comparable only when the same method is followed — which is exactly why caliper is treated as a directly measured specification rather than an estimate.

How Caliper Is Expressed

Caliper is expressed in a few interchangeable units, depending on the industry and the instrument used:

  • Inches — as a decimal fraction, such as 0.004″.
  • Mils (thousandths of an inch) — 1 mil equals 0.001″.
  • Micrometers (microns) — the metric unit used for expressing thickness.

The conversions between these units are exact, not approximate, because they follow directly from internationally defined unit constants:

  • 1 mil = 0.001 inch (exact, by definition of the mil).
  • 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters (exact, by international agreement).
  • Therefore, 1 mil = 25.4 micrometers (exact).

A caliper of 4 mils, for example, is exactly 0.004″ and exactly 101.6 microns (4 × 25.4). Any of the three figures describes the identical physical thickness.

Caliper vs. Basis Weight vs. GSM

Caliper is easy to confuse with basis weight or GSM, since all three sometimes appear on the same specification sheet — but they measure different things. Caliper is thickness: a direct, physical dimension. Basis weight and GSM are both mass per unit area — pounds per ream at a category-specific basic size, or grams per square meter, respectively. Thickness and weight-per-area are related characteristics — heavier basis weights are often thicker — but they are not interchangeable, and one does not reliably predict the other. There is no universal formula that converts a basis weight or GSM figure into a caliper value. Two papers sharing an identical basis weight or GSM should not be assumed to share an identical caliper.

Why Caliper Can Vary at the Same Basis Weight or GSM

If basis weight and GSM measure mass per unit area, and two papers share the same value, why can their thickness still differ? The answer is a property papermakers call bulk — specific volume, the inverse of density. At the same grammage, a higher-bulk sheet can be thicker because the sheet occupies more volume for the same mass. That is why papers with the same GSM or basis weight should not be assumed to have the same caliper.

Why Caliper Matters on a Paper Roll

In the idealized geometry used to estimate roll footage, material thickness determines how quickly the wound roll builds outward from the core. A higher-caliper material therefore produces less estimated footage within the same roll OD than a lower-caliper material, all else equal.

A few practical consequences follow from that relationship:

  • Material fit within a given roll OD. A thicker (higher-caliper) material is estimated to fit less linear footage within a given outside diameter than a thinner material, because it takes up more radial space per wrap.
  • Linear-footage estimation. Caliper is one of the required inputs for estimating how much material is on a roll from its dimensions.   • Dimensional fit and machine clearance. Why Basis Weight Alone Can’t Tell You Thickness

Because bulk is not fixed by basis weight or GSM alone, a weight figure by itself cannot reliably tell you how thick a paper is. Two rolls quoted at the identical basis weight, or the identical GSM, can still have meaningfully different calipers.
