Basis weight and GSM both describe paper weight, but they use different systems. GSM expresses mass per square meter directly, while U.S. basis weight is tied to a paper category’s basic size. That means a pound rating cannot be converted accurately to GSM unless the paper category or basic size is known first. Basis Weight vs. GSM at a Glance
The two systems measure the same underlying thing — how much a given paper weighs — differently:
- Basis weight — the customary U.S. designation: pounds per ream (conventionally 500 sheets) at a category-specific basic size. It only compares directly within the same category.
- GSM (grammage) — grams per square meter: a direct measure of mass per unit area. It does not depend on which basic size a category uses, so it compares more consistently across categories.
Why There Is No Universal “80 lb to GSM” Answer
Because basis weight is tied to a category-specific basic size, the same pound number means a different amount of material depending on which category it belongs to. An 80 lb text/book paper and an 80 lb cover paper, for example, are calculated from different basic sizes, so they convert to different GSM values — not approximately the same value, but meaningfully different, as the worked example below shows. There is no single “80 lb = X GSM” answer that applies across every paper category; the category has to be known before a conversion means anything.
The Basis Weight to GSM Formula
Converting a basis weight to GSM takes three pieces of information: the basis weight itself, the paper category’s basic size (width × length, in inches), and the ream sheet count the basis-weight system uses for that category — by convention, 500 sheets, though TAPPI notes that some products use a different count. This guide uses the conventional 500-sheet ream throughout, consistent with our basis weight guide.
The logic: find the weight of one sheet, divide by that sheet’s area to get weight per unit area, then convert units (pounds to grams, square inches to square meters). One pound per square inch equals approximately 703,070 grams per square meter — a figure derived directly from the exact, internationally defined pound (453.59237 g) and inch (25.4 mm), not from an online calculator. For the conventional 500-sheet ream, that reduces to:
GSM = (Basis Weight × 1,406.14) ÷ (Basic Size Width × Basic Size Length)
where the basic size dimensions are in inches. (703,070 ÷ 500 ≈ 1,406.14.) If a specific product’s basis weight happens to use a different sheet count, the constant scales accordingly — divide 703,070 by that sheet count instead of 500.
Worked Example: Convert Basis Weight to GSM
Take an 80 lb cover paper. Cover paper’s basic size is 20″ × 26″, and this example uses the conventional 500-sheet ream:
- Basic sheet area: 20 × 26 = 520 in²
- GSM = (80 × 1,406.14) ÷ 520
- GSM = 112,491.2 ÷ 520
- GSM ≈ 216.3, rounded to 216 g/m²
An 80 lb cover paper works out to approximately 216 gsm. For readability, this guide rounds the result to the nearest whole gram per square meter rather than carrying it out to extra decimal places that the underlying specification cannot actually support.
Why 80 lb Text and 80 lb Cover Convert Differently
Run the same formula for an 80 lb text/book paper, whose basic size is 25″ × 38″:
- Basic sheet area: 25 × 38 = 950 in²
- GSM = (80 × 1,406.14) ÷ 950
- GSM = 112,491.2 ÷ 950
- GSM ≈ 118.4, rounded to 118 g/m²
80 lb text/book paper works out to roughly 118 gsm, compared with roughly 216 gsm for 80 lb cover — substantially higher, despite both carrying the identical “80 lb” label. This is exactly the confusion our basis weight guide describes: the pound number alone does not identify how much material is actually there. Note that this comparison is about weight per unit area only — it says nothing about which paper is “better” or more suitable for any particular use, and it does not tell you anything about either paper’s thickness.
Converting GSM Back to Basis Weight
The same formula runs in reverse, using the same 500-sheet convention:
Basis Weight = (GSM × Basic Size Width × Basic Size Length) ÷ 1,406.14
The catch is the same one that makes lb-to-GSM conversion category dependent: you still need to know which paper category, and therefore which basic size, you want the result expressed in. GSM by itself does not tell you which basis-weight category label applies — the same GSM value produces a different basis-weight number depending on the basic size used. As a check, converting 216 gsm back through the cover basic size (20″ × 26″): (216 × 520) ÷ 1,406.14 ≈ 79.9, which rounds back to the 80 lb cover figure the worked example started from — the small difference from exactly 80 comes from having already rounded 216 to a whole number in the first calculation.
Common Basic Sizes Used in Conversion
A short, non-exhaustive list of basic sizes, useful for running the formula above (the same values used in our basis weight guide):
- Bond paper: 17″ × 22″
- Cover paper: 20″ × 26″
- Text/book paper: 25″ × 38″
Other categories use their own basic sizes. When in doubt, confirm the basic size for your specific paper category before converting, rather than assuming one of the sizes above applies.
Basis Weight vs. GSM vs. Caliper
Basis weight and GSM both describe a paper’s mass or weight, through different systems. Caliper measures something else entirely: physical thickness. Neither basis weight nor GSM uniquely determines caliper — two papers with the same GSM, or the same basis weight, are not guaranteed to have the same thickness. If caliper matters for your application, it needs to be specified and measured on its own.
Which Number Should a Buyer Use?
As a general rule, preserve whatever your source material already specifies rather than converting it unnecessarily:
- If the source specifies GSM, pass along the GSM value as given.
- If the source specifies basis weight, pass along the grade or category together with the basis weight — the two travel together, since the number alone does not identify the stock.
- If both are available, provide both; it removes any ambiguity about which basic size was assumed.
Converting a supplier’s original specification into a different unit introduces a place for error to creep in when the original figure would have worked fine on its own.
